Who is Misty Ventures

Economic Development is not new to Mistawasis Nehiyawak. It has always been based on the need to provide for the community, but also driven by a better quality of living. What culturally and historically started as being keepers of the land, grew to a trading industry, and has evolved into modern day business. It was with this mindset that Mistawasis Nehiyawak started their journey to become a business ready entity that would provide financial stability as well as work opportunities for the Nation. In 2011, Mistawasis Nehiyawak made the decision to separate business from governance and applied to be part of the Business Ready Investment Development Gateway Program. The bridge program was created by INAC (Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada) and overseen by a group of board members from the private sector. The program chose a total of 9 First Nation Communities to become partners with in order to help them become business ready. Mistawasis Nehiyawak was one of the nine communities chosen to be part of the program and Misty Ventures Incorporated was created. Working from the knowledge and success of the bridge program, Mistawasis Nehiyawak was confident in their abilities to continue to grow, and in 2013 restructured. With support and guidance from the leaders of the community, a new board was created that consisted of Mistawasis Nehiyawak band members. From 2013 to 2015 with the new board in place, there was significant strategic planning, including incorporating and getting financials in order, in order to truly become a business ready entity. In January 2016, Mistawasis Nêhiyawak hired Robert Daniels to become the CEO of Misty Ventures Incorporated (Misty Ventures). From 2016 onward, Misty Ventures has created a total of 7 prosperous companies.

Misty Petroleum a Gas Station and Café located in the town of Leask, Saskatchewan.
Misty Burton Concrete Services was created to handle any aggregate work above ground such as concrete, gravel and topsoil.
Misty Chemco a general contractor service was developed in order to assist with the majority of heavy industrial, electrical and instrumental projects.
Misty Clifton Engineering an engineering firm developed to complete site testing, collect soil samples, and provide many other environmental services.
HCC Group specializes in Contract Mining & Maintenance, Underground Bin Construction & Rehabilitation, Contract Drilling & Blasting, Road Building & Site Prep, Water & Sewer Construction and Gravel Crushing.

Each Misty Ventures subsidiary works independently of each other with its own Director/CEO to oversee the business and its progress. However, each entity reports and is directed by Misty Ventures. All companies work together as the economic development arm of Mistawasis Nêhiyawak, along with good governance and support from the community, Misty Ventures is able to provide meaningful employment to band members, financial independence for the Nation, and continues to give back and provide a better quality of living for its members. Today, Misty Ventures is truly business ready, open for business, and is always looking for new opportunities to grow and give back to the community of Mistawasis Nêhiyawak.

Our Team

Robert (Bobby) Daniels

President/CEO

Robert (Bobby) Daniels is first and foremost an active member of Mistawasis Nêhiyawak who grew up first hand seeing the growth and prosperity of the nation. He has experience in a number of different trades and professions, but with the help of Mistawasis Nehiyawak , Bobby completed his Bachelor Degree in Social Work through the University of Regina and FNUC. He also pursed and obtained a diploma of Business Management through SIIT, and used his educational background to get a job with the Provincial Government. He worked for 11 years in a supervisory role while attending classes to complete his MBA at the University of Saskatchewan. With his MBA completed, Bobby decided to leave the Provincial Government in order to take on a Senior Position with Saskatchewan Indian Institute of Technology. For 9 years, Bobby was the Director of Marketing and Communications, while sitting on a number of boards, coaching a minor hockey team, and being an active member of both the Mistawasis and Saskatoon community. In 2016, Bobby decided that he could do more for Mistawasis and took on the position of CEO of Misty Ventures. With his years of business experience, involvement on numerous boards, and large network of contacts, Bobby is a fundamental asset and catalyst for Misty Ventures.

The Board

STEVEN JOHNSTON

CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD

Steven is an undergraduate of the College of Commerce at the U of S. He is currently serving his third consecutive term as a Board of Director for the Aboriginal Financial Officers Association – Saskatchewan, and involved in a number of local boards/committees with Mistawasis Nêhiyawak which include Lands and Economic Development. His background also includes six years as Chief Financial Officer for Mistawasis Nêhiyawak, prior to his election as Councillor, and Co-Manager and Third Party Management with various Communities in Central Saskatchewan for nine years where he gained working knowledge of diversification and growing with the Communities he worked for.

Steven was instrumental in diligently obtaining the Financial Performance (FP) Certificate through the First Nations Financial Management Board that indicates good financial health. With good financial health and taking back financial authority, through the First Nations Fiscal Management Act, 2005, opens the door for Mistawasis to access a host financial tools and borrowing capacities for eligible capital projects, including; infrastructure; social and economic development; land purchases; independent power/green energy projects; community housing; and rolling stock/heavy equipment.

As a lifelong resident of Mistawasis he understands and firmly believes in the potential that exists in the people and businesses within Mistawasis. He also contributes time and energy to several charitable causes and non-profits.

Community Organizations and Events

Misty Ventures is dedicated to supporting meaningful Community Organizations and Events. Our support is best utilized when given to a group rather than a specific individual. We want to help build and better our community by giving back to local sports teams, our elders, and local events such as Pow Wow’s.

Charitable Organizations

Misty Ventures believes that is important to donate and give back to Charitable Organizations such as Telemiracle and the Shellbrooke Hospital, as these are services that can impact and assist the community of Mistawasis Nêhiyawak.
